I was getting worried that we’d collectively forgotten how to make a good teaser trailer, but The Devil Wears Prada 2 has just shown everybody how it’s done.
Without giving away any of the upcoming storyline, the trailer follows Miranda’s (Meryl Streep) red studded heels through the Runway office. She then strikes her iconic elevator pose from the original film before being joined by Andy (Anne Hathaway), who’s now a flawless executive.
Gird your loins! The Devil Wears Prada 2 trailer all but confirms a real-life Met Gala appearance
Watch On
We already know that The Devil Wears Prada 2 is going to feature a scene at the Met Gala, but the event itself is entirely fake. The movie constructed a pretend version of former Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour’s famed fashion extravaganza, with Streep and Stanley Tucci (Nigel) spotted on the red carpet.
We briefly see a shot of this in the teaser trailer, but look what else is happening. In between Miranda walking to the elevator, we see glimpses of an unknown woman getting ready for what looks like a swanky formal event, which could be the fashion industry’s biggest night.
Of course, this could be a reference to seeing the film itself. But factor in that the sequel will be released on May 1 2026, three days before next year’s Met Gala, and it’s almost a given that we’ll see the awesome foursome on the real-life carpet too (hopefully, with Streep in character).
The mystery woman could also be a mammoth cameo that’s yet to be revealed, on her way to the Met Gala itself. A never-ending list of A-list guest stars have already been confirmed, but do we really think every single one has already been revealed?
It would be the most meta movie promo in the history of Hollywood, and The Devil Wears Prada 2 is the only film camp and fierce enough to pull it off. It’s as much of a given that there are unspoken surprises still lying in store, and the fact that the trailer gives next to nothing away only adds to the thrill.
All I’m saying is that I think the teaser is setting a precedent for going all-out in its marketing, fulling committing to the bit. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to watch the original on Disney+ for the 479538th time.
