Backrooms is the highly anticipated new movie from A24, and some newly released photos have got me feeling even more excited about it.
In March, the Backrooms trailer was finally revealed, and I noted that it felt like a perfect adaptation of the Creepypasta story. With Kane Parsons directing it, I’m confident it’ll be in good hands as he’s already brought the lore to life through his YouTube series.
9 new images have been released for Backrooms, but one in particular has really stood out to me and unsettled me more than I’d expected. Let’s discuss my favorite image of the set below.

This single Backrooms image has left me feeling very unsettled
As far as teaser images go, the above one was by far the most unsettling for me. We see Renate Reinsve standing in front of a house, which would be a fairly ordinary setting if it weren’t for the horrible yellow background we’ve come to associate with Backrooms lore.
At first glance, it’s easy to miss that she’s actually inside the Backrooms until you focus on that yellow color, when reality hits. I’m very interested in the context of this scene and why they’ve gone for a suburban vibe here. Is it to trick characters into thinking they’re safe? Does someone live here?
Take a look at the full set of stills below, which was shared by IMDb via their Instagram.
The mystery of the Backrooms is endlessly interesting as it’s so easy to go off and do deep dives into what fans have written about it, expanding on its lore. We don’t know what might be lurking in here, if anything, which is the most unsettling thing for me.
Taking something ordinary and making it feel strange is a huge part of liminal horror, just like Exit 8, which I gave a four-star review to. Additionally, I interviewed director Genki Kawamura and learned why he’s excited for the Backrooms movie.
The countdown is on for Backrooms, and we don’t have long to wait as it’s arriving in theaters on May 29. Are you brave enough to venture inside?
